Throwback Thursday with some Skiing, Biking, and Rafting!
Utah skiing may have be done but Colorado still had plenty of snow to enjoy.
Lost GoPro on Minturn Mile (April 12 - June 8)
On a rare powder day in April, I was skiing with my PCT sister, Shark, and some of her friends from back East. We shredded all around Vail and decided to end the day with the Minturn Mile, a long backcountry route that follows a stream bed from Vail Resort to the neighboring town of Minturn. We hit some of the best, fresh, lines of the season on the way down and it was absolutely spectacular…until I dropped my GoPro in the deep powder.
We searched for a few minutes before realizing it was a goner. It was such a great day and I didn’t want to hold up the crew from finishing the Minturn Mile so I decided I would return in a few days to search for it. We finished the Mile and went to Rocky Mountain Tacos for some much needed calories.
Attempt 1, April 15, I skied down and dug around with my avalanche shovel. No Luck.
Attempt 2, May 3, I hiked up from Minturn armed with a metal detector. No Luck.
Attempt 3, June 8, I biked up from Minturn and the snow had finally melted away.
Loveland Pass Full Moon Party
There is a long standing tradition for skiers and boarders to gather at Loveland Pass during every full moon to party and ski laps between the switchbacks. At the lower turn there is a big gravel lot which sometimes hosts bonfires and DJ sets and then folks with trucks will say “ALL ABOARD” and cram as many people as possible in the bed before driving them to the top of the pass. With the light of the full moon you don’t really even need a headlamp to find the lines back down to the party. This particular night dumped some powder which made it all the more memorable. I stayed up until 3am doing laps with the best of em.
The next morning I got a “knock knock” from a Transit Authority employee who informed me that Loveland Pass was closed and I would have to move my vehicle down to the bottom. I obliged and took a nap in the ski resort parking lot and then went back over the pass to have a relaxing day at Keystone. But I discovered that it was their Closing Day, and it began to snow again, so I wound up staying all day and skiing 25k feet of vert.
Mount Pisgah
I was heading down to Denver to fly back to my homestate of Maryland for a few days, so on the way I camped in the mountains and had a night hike up Mount Pisgah to catch the sunrise.
MISC
I drifted down to Buena Vista, CO for some mountain biking and rafting, skied with some friends in Breckenridge, and saw some neat things to shoot as I drifted around this wonderful state.
