BAJA 2) Bahía Concepción

Day 4: Mulege to Playa Santispac

After watching another gorgeous sunset and then seeing dozens of birds go fishing, we made the short drive to the bay and wow was it gorgeous. We stopped at Playa Santispac which had a lot of RVs lining the shoreline and then we went for a kayak/paddleboard trip around an island and to a beach accessible only by water. It was the maiden voyage of my packraft and it was great… although without a skeg (AKA a fin, like on a surfboard) it was very difficult to track in a straight line.

Waiting on some supplemental footage, full video coming soon!

We then hiked up a small hill on a peninsula to watch the sunset and take the maiden voyage with my other new toy, a drone! The lighting wasn’t great, nor were my piloting skills, so check the video from tomorrow with better drone footage.

Day 5: Playa Santispac to Loretto

After catching sunrise and playing with my drone some more, we continued south and spent some time at Playa El Coyote where I had the maiden voyage of my huge shade canopy… although we barely used it. We went for another paddle and hung out on Isla Coyote, did some snorkeling, and decided to hit the road.

We booked it to Loreto and walked around town for a bit. Then it was time to find camp which wound up being next to another airport, our third such location of the trip. The beach was hidden away and had a few palapas ready to be claimed. I checked the structure and decided it could support my hammock so I had another maiden voyage in my Warbonnet RidgeRunner. It is bridge-style which allows one to lay almost completely flat, I can sleep on my stomach!

Morning view after spending the first night in my new comfy hammock.

Day 6: Back to the Pacific!

First up was a stop at Playa Juncalito to snorkel around and I concluded I need to get some flippers to make life underwater a bit easier. We saw a huge sea turtle who looked pretty bleached white and was barely moving, I hope he had a peaceful final few days.

We witnessed a motorcycle crash on the winding road up the hill. He was rather recklessly trying to pass three cars and a semitruck while going around a turn, and a pickup truck behind the semi also went to pass without seeing the biker. Amanda’s nursing skills kicked in to assess the riders and luckily cops were driving behind it and witnessed everything. We helped load the broken motorcycle into a pickup and then crossed the high desert to the town of Adolfo López Mateos. There is a large mangrove patch north of town so we posted up there and admired the full moon before bed, and then the lunar eclipse / Beaver Moon at 3am.
